Selena Gomez Opens Up About Double Standards for Women in the Spotlight

Selena Gomez is speaking out about the unfair scrutiny women face, especially in the public eye.

During her appearance on the On Purpose podcast with Jay Shetty, Gomez shared her thoughts right after her fiancé, Benny Blanco, explained why social media negativity doesn’t affect him—because he doesn’t read or care about it.

Gomez, however, admitted, “I was also going to point out that women have it much worse.”

She explained that women deal with much harsher criticism, saying, “From my perspective, it's pretty wild, and I think this isn't news to anybody, that obviously women have a lot more intense feelings from their appearance to what they're wearing to everything.”

She also shared how online comments can be hurtful, especially before public events. “When I get prepared for an event, 90 percent of the time I'm just like, ‘I just hope I can take the picture and sit down.’ It's the character that gets judged, it's the way I'm not white enough, I'm not Mexican enough.”

Gomez noted how men don’t face the same level of scrutiny, especially regarding personal choices.

She also pointed out that her weight is often a target for criticism.

She ended by admitting how all the negativity has affected her: “Everyone just has something to say and it's really making me sad and — not even sad ‘cause, I'm not a victim, everyone — I just think it's made me a tad bitter, and I feel really guilty for saying that, but it's true.”
