Jennifer Lopez recently shared the profound personal connection she felt while filming her upcoming movie, "Unstoppable", which coincided with her divorce from Ben Affleck.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Lopez revealed that her role as Judy Robles, the mother of champion wrestler Anthony Robles, struck a personal chord. Judy’s struggles in an abusive marriage mirrored challenges Lopez could relate to.
“There was a lot about her that I understood,” the 55-year-old actress and singer said. She described Judy’s complex relationship with her husband, adding, “There were different sides to [her husband] that the kids didn’t see, that only Judy saw. With those types of people, there’s a part of them that fools you into thinking that they care about you and that they truly love you—and it’s really about their damage that they’re putting onto you.”
Reflecting on Judy’s resilience, Lopez continued, “There was a lot going on with the two of them that was dysfunctional and unhealthy, but she loved him and wanted him to be there.”
When Lopez first encountered the real-life story behind "Unstoppable", she was deeply moved. “When I first learned about the true story behind 'Unstoppable', I was moved beyond words,” she shared. “It’s a testament to resilience, grit, and the human spirit.”
The movie chronicles Anthony Robles, a wrestler born with one leg who defied the odds to win the 2011 NCAA individual wrestling championship.
Lopez expressed her admiration for both Anthony and Judy, saying, “It was such an honor playing Judy Robles in this incredible story about her son Anthony Robles. Both Anthony and Judy are real examples and define what it means to be UNSTOPPABLE.”
"Unstoppable" will have a limited theatrical release starting December 6. Produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, the film also stars Jharrel Jerome as Anthony, alongside Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, and Don Cheadle.
