Elon Musk, CEO of Neuralink, has revealed that the neurotech startup has successfully implanted its brain chip into a human being for the first time. The announcement came on Monday via Musk's social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, where he expressed optimism about the early results.
The patient, a member of Neuralink's inaugural human test group, underwent the implant procedure on Sunday and is reportedly in good condition following the surgery. Musk stated, "Initial results show promising neuron spike detection," indicating an encouraging outcome for the trial.
Named "Telepathy," the brain chip is designed to enable users to control devices such as phones and computers through thought alone. Musk elaborated, envisioning a future where individuals could communicate at unprecedented speeds, surpassing even the capabilities of renowned physicist Stephen Hawking.
Neuralink's first human trial focuses on individuals who have lost motor function due to various conditions. According to reports from TMZ, the company is assessing the safety of both the implant itself and the surgical robot responsible for its insertion. Additionally, Neuralink aims to evaluate the practical functionality of its innovative technology in real-world settings.
The trial received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May, marking a significant milestone in Neuralink's journey towards final regulatory approval. While this achievement represents a crucial advancement for Musk's company and the field of neuroscience, it underscores the ongoing process required to bring such groundbreaking innovations to fruition.
