The official cause of Matthew Perry's tragic passing has been disclosed by the LA County Medical Examiner’s Office, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding the beloved Friends alum's death.
Matthew Perry, who had been on the path to recovery and reportedly 19 months sober, succumbed to the acute effects of ketamine, with the medical examiner categorizing the manner of death as "accidental." The actor had been undergoing "ketamine infusion therapy," with his last treatment taking place approximately 10 days prior to his demise, as indicated in the autopsy report.
While the report notes that ketamine's half-life typically lasts three to four hours, it is puzzling how the drug remained in his system beyond the final infusion. Law enforcement officers found no traces of drugs at Perry's LA mansion when responding to the scene of his death.
In a surprising twist, the report also highlights drowning, coronary artery disease, and the presence of buprenorphine—an opioid—as additional contributing factors to his untimely demise.
This revelation follows Matthew Perry's candid disclosure about his battle with drug addiction to PEOPLE magazine in October 2022. Reflecting on his struggle, he admitted, “I didn't know how to stop. If the police came over to my house and said, 'If you drink tonight, we're going to take you to jail,' I'd start packing. I couldn't stop because the disease and the addiction are progressive.”
The untimely death of the talented actor has left fans mourning and serves as a stark reminder of the challenges individuals face in their journey toward recovery.
