Netflix engineer Yohanes Kidane, previously reported as missing, has been discovered deceased in the San Francisco Bay, as authorities confirmed, PEOPLE reported.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office disclosed that on August 29, the California Highway Patrol alerted their coroner division regarding the finding of an unconscious individual in the San Francisco Bay northeast of the Golden Gate Bridge by a passing boat.
Despite advanced decomposition and prolonged exposure to the aquatic environment, paramedics pronounced the individual dead upon retrieval.
An initial investigation yielded no identification, prompting further efforts to scientifically identify the deceased, who was positively identified as Yohanes Stefanos Kidane two days later. The sheriff's office then informed his next of kin about the tragic discovery.
A subsequent forensic postmortem examination revealed that Yohanes' cause of death was attributed to blunt impact injuries with drowning as a significant contributing factor, with the mode of death determined as suicide.
Yohanes Kidane, aged 22, had recently relocated to San Jose after graduating from Cornell University to pursue a career as a Netflix software engineer. His disappearance on August 14, following a ride in an Uber at around 7:15 p.m. local time, had raised concerns.
Family members had been desperately trying to locate him, with his phone's last known location at the Golden Gate Bridge on the evening of August 14, remaining unchanged the following day.
His cell phone, wallet, and backpack were later found at the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center. Yosief Kidane, Yohanes' older brother, described him as his "best friend" and highlighted his exceptional engineering talents. Yohanes had been with Netflix for just two weeks before this tragic incident.
The San Jose Police Department, in a statement, indicated that there was no evidence of foul play in the case and officially closed the missing person investigation, expressing condolences to Yohanes Kidane's family.
