In his first interview in six years, the singer of the hit song "PILLOWTALK" revealed that there were intricate power dynamics at play within the band, which ultimately influenced his choice to depart. Malik expressed awareness of certain individuals engaging in specific actions and hesitating to sign contracts, indicating that he sensed something significant was unfolding. Consequently, he decided to take preemptive action, recognizing that it was time for him to move on. Malik explained, "Certain people were doing certain things, certain people didn’t want to sign contracts, so I knew something was happening, so I just got ahead of the curve. I was like, ‘I’m just going to get out of here. I think this is done'."
The musician further admitted that his desire for creative autonomy played a crucial role in his departure. Unveiling his candid thoughts to the podcast host, Alex Cooper, Malik confessed, "I completely selfishly wanted to be the first person to go and make my own record, if I’m being completely honest with you. I was like, ‘I’m going to jump the gun here for the first time’."

Moreover, Malik disclosed that underlying issues within his relationships with his former bandmates, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, and Harry Styles, contributed to his decision. Reflecting on the intense bond they shared after spending five years together, Malik acknowledged that they eventually grew weary of one another's company. He stated, "We’ve been together every day for five years and we got sick of each other, if I’m being completely honest."

The 30-year-old artist remarked, "There were great experiences. I had great times with them, but yeah, we just run our course."

He conveyed his belief that the band had been excessively exposed, necessitating a period of personal growth and self-reflection. Malik asserted, "I think that’s why I’ve took the time I have to not even necessarily do interviews and do too much press exposure because I feel like we were so overexposed in the band that it takes a bit of time for you naturally to progress as a human."
