On April 6, the "Pillow Talk" singer posted a picture on Instagram, in which he can be seen donning a black jacket and showing off his new cornrow hairstyle, while posing in the studio with music producer and engineer Daniel Zaidenstadt.
Following the post, several fans expressed their discontentment over the singer's hairstyle in the comment section.
Some even accused Zayn, who is of Pakistani and British heritage, of cultural appropriation.
One comment read, "Now I KNOWWWW that ain't Zayn w some cornrows," while another pleaded, "Zayn take out those god damn [sic] cornrows." Some fans also criticized the hairstyle for not being aesthetically pleasing.
Nevertheless, there were some fans who appreciated the new look and expressed their support for the singer.
One fan praised Zayn by stating that he looked good with the cornrows, while another joked that Selena Gomez, who is allegedly dating Zayn, had won.
Zayn has not yet responded to the criticism. It is unclear if the singer is aware of the controversy surrounding his new hairstyle or if he has any plans to address it.
