West Rowan Football team announced the news on Twitter, paying tribute to the player's off-field impact, saying that he was "a better person than he was a player." The Salisbury Post has also confirmed the news in an obituary.

Chris Smith's passing is a tragic loss for his family, friends, former teammates, and Rowan County. He was known for his generosity, and according to his obituary, he was "the ultimate give-back guy," donating to local schools and projects.
