At around 3 a.m. on the following day, her psychiatrist, Dr. Ralph Greenson, found her dead in her bedroom at her Brentwood home.
Media outlets across the United States and Europe carried the story of the actress’s death. The empty medicine bottles found next to her bed were believed to be evidence of her suicide.
Her death was attributed to acute barbiturate poisoning based on toxicology tests. Dr. Greenson was called by Monroe's housekeeper, Eunice Murray, who felt something was wrong when she awoke at 3 a.m.

Murray had seen light through Monroe's door. It was locked, and the actress wouldn't respond.
At 3:50 a.m., Monroe's medical doctor, Dr. Hyman Engelberg, arrived at her house and declared her dead.
There was a report in Los Angeles that the suicide rate doubled after she died. Her death caused the circulation rate of most newspapers that month to grow to an all-time high.

People of fame expressed their sympathies. As Frencrh artist Jean Cocteau stated, Monroe's death should serve as the sole lesson for those whose main occupation involved spying on and tormenting movie stars.
According to actor Laurence Olivier, Monroe was totally mistreated and victimized by publicity and sensation. Film director Joshua Logan described her as one of the most unappreciated people on the planet.
