Holland wasn't only physically challenged, but his emotional state was affected by the dark film.
During filming for his new movie, "Cherry," actor Tom Holland says he took extreme measures to slim down for his part as a scrawny heroin addict — even doing some workouts in a plastic garbage bag.
In the April issue of GQ, the 24-year-old said, "I lost around 27 pounds by running in a bin bag every day. It was awful. Truly."
Holland realized that his character had to give up his buff physique and become an emaciated drug addict mere weeks before shooting the film.

He became desperate and used a trashy tactic to generate more sweat during workouts for the purpose of speeding up his water weight loss. Additionally, he drastically altered his eating habits.
"I sat down with my trainer, George Ashwell, and he told me, 'Right, you need to eat only 500 calories a day and run ten miles. Go,'" he told the magazine. "Great. It was brutal."
Holland had to gain muscle quickly for the part, which caused him even additional pain.

"And then bulking up, going from a drug addict to shooting scenes as a marine? I got very sick, actually," the actor said.
According to Holland, he won't be able to take on a role that requires such extreme body transformations in the future.
