During an interview in the documentary, titled "Francesco," Pope Francis expressed his support for same-sex civil unions for his first time as head of the Catholic Church.
Francis told filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky: "What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered. I stood up for that."
As reported by Vice, Francis had previously shown support for same-sex couples' civil unions during his tenure as archbishop of Buenos Aires.
